History: Subject Search – further information

How does the retrieval work?

The subject search is hierarchically structured. In the first listbox you can choose a historical region (e.g. Great Britain or Ireland or the United States) or an overarching historical topic (e.g. history of historiography). In this case you will get a large result set. In case of more than 500 hits not all results will be displayed.

In the following listboxes you can reduce, step-by-step, the number of hits by choosing more specific topics (e.g. history of the United States; history of the United States 1918-1945; society; women). In this case you will usually get a more precise result set with less than 500 hits.

How will I get the books?

Click on the respective title and you will get more bibliographical information and additional links. To borrow a book, click the link with the catalogue name, e.g. “SUB Göttingen”. There you can order either via the subito service (fee required) or via the interlibrary loan of the GBV (the regional library cataloguing cooperative of Northern Germany). For many results, a lot additional information will be displayed (e.g. table of contents; Google Books preview etc.).

In case of a website you can, of course, click at the respective link. The website will be presented in a new window.

Which collections are accessible via the subject search?

All monographs acquired since 1995 by the history librarian and, additionally, the websites of the History Guide. Articles in journals or conference proceedings etc. are not indexed by classification notations. You can find them via title keywords in the main search.
